Watan

SCOPE OF WORKS

JSJ Design were appointed to deliver the interior concept for Watan, a vibrant Middle Eastern restaurant located in the heart of Tooting, London. The client’s vision was to create a warm, inviting space that would reflect the rich culture and culinary heritage of the Silk Road, with a particular focus on Afghani cuisine.

The design needed to support the restaurant’s family-friendly, alcohol-free ethos while offering an atmospheric setting that would appeal to the local community and visitors alike.

CONCEPT DIRECTION

Taking inspiration from the Silk Road, Middle Eastern and Islamic art, and the colours of the spices used in the restaurant’s dishes, JSJ Design developed a rich, layered scheme that combines earthy textures with bold statement elements.

  • A palette of deep greens, clay tones and warm neutrals forms the backdrop, echoing the spices and natural materials central to the cuisine.
  • The space features a double-height clay wall with elegant arches, adding architectural rhythm and drama to the dining room.
  • Bespoke Islamic-inspired artwork, commissioned for the project, has been transformed into a striking mural along the kitchen wall — linking art, culture, and cuisine.

SPACE + EXPERIENCE

The restaurant benefits from high ceilings and a mezzanine level, enhancing the sense of openness and allowing flexibility for private hire and events.

Seating is a mix of fixed banquettes upholstered in rich patterned fabrics and loose chairs in textured materials and faux leathers, offering variety and comfort. The scheme is brought to life with:

Generous planting, creating a sense of oasis and softness throughout

Statement lighting, with oversized pendants and warm glow wall lights that add intimacy to the grand proportions of the space

OUTCOME

The result is a restaurant that feels both welcoming and refined, resonating with the local community and attracting loyal diners who appreciate the thoughtful design and authentic atmosphere.
