JSJ Design appointed to redesign Deluxe rooms and Squires staircase at The Capital
History of the area directly inspired the new design schemes for this 5-star Knightsbridge hotel
JSJ Design has been appointed to redesign the Deluxe guestrooms, Squires staircase and corridors at The Capital, owned by Warwick Hotels & Resorts.
With work already underway, the refurbishment is due to complete at the end of September 2023.
Our design concept evolved from a research piece into the history of Knightsbridge, the local area and what made this affluent part of London what it is today. Directly inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites who lived and worked in the area around the time of The Great Exhibition, the rooms will feature rich colours, nods to nature and narrative-led artworks that connect past and present.
There are two distinct room schemes across the new Deluxe guest bedrooms. Both take their names and colourways directly from oil paintings by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, widely regarded as the founder of the Pre-Raphaelites.
Lead designer and JSJ Design director, Simeon Thompson said:
“Contemporary Knightsbridge is a direct consequence of The Great Exhibition due to the artists and wealth that flocked to the area at that time. The Pre-Raphaelite movement is one of the most influential epochs of art in recent history. It produced work so rich in colour and texture and steeped in narrative, we were immediately drawn to it.”
The Squires public areas feature an impressive wrap-around staircase over three floors. A separate corridor leads to the fourth-floor which boasts an impressive balcony overlooking the main staircase below. Decorated with ornate cornice and a domed ceiling, all original features will be sensitively preserved as part of the refurbishment.
The staircase and corridor design have a connected design concept to the Deluxe rooms and have been directly inspired by a painting by artist John Everett Millais.

Many elements of both the guest room and corridor schemes are being designed and made bespoke, from the carpet to furniture items and case goods.
Those with a piqued interest in the Pre-Raphaelites can see the largest exhibition of Rossetti works in 30 years, currently on show at Tate Britain. ‘The Rossetti’s’ is open until 24 September 2023 and features the works of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Christina Rossetti, William and Jane Morris, Elizabeth Siddal, and John Everett Millais that inspired our designs for The Capital.
